Lauren Brown
Where were you raised? Has the landscape of that place influenced your work in any way?
I grew up just outside of Boston, in Lexington/Concord...pure American Revolution.
I would watch my dentist fight the British Red Coats every April in a head-to-toe Minuteman ensemble.
It influenced me in the expected ways-love of nature, education, history, transcendentalism. But also in the unexpected-its culture favors old societal structures and that influenced me to want its exact opposite.
How do you re-charge your creative battery?
I wish I had healthy things to tell you...all long walks and spinach. But I don't! At least not yet! Currently it's hours of television and mozzarella sticks.
What book are you reading?
I'm in the middle of three books to take care of all of my needs: The Year Of Magical Thinking (Joan Didion), Leonardo Da Vinci (Walter Isaacson) and Daring Greatly (Brene Brown).
I have also just finished reading everything that Nora Ephron and Maya Angelou have ever written-completely obsessed with them. I also read a little erotica on the side to get that blood flowin'.
What was the last thing that you fell in love with?
The feeling of clean, cold, soft bed sheets.
What do you love most about yourself?
I'm never bored.
What do you think is the most important quality in a human?
Empathy and a great sense of humor (bonus points if you can laugh at yourself...I'm still working on that part).
Do you have a spiritual practice?
Playing the drums and eating and petting my large hairy cat (not a euphemism).
Who are your role models?
Anyone I meet that's fearless, kind and funny.
I think I have thousands so far and plenty more in my future!
If you could change one thing about our world, what would it be? Is there an individual or an organization doing work in this area that you want us to know about?
We need to give each other a break. Forgiveness. Empathy. Love.
