Moriah Stanton
Where were you raised? Has the landscape of that place influenced your work in any way?
Taos, NM. Absolutely, The landscape here in New Mexico is medicine. The sense of freedom I can connect with because of the great expanse of land and endless sky must make its way into my work, whether it is apparent or not.
I always say, I was lucky enough to be born here, it didn’t take me years to discover the magic, as so many creatives had to do.
How do you re-charge your creative battery?
Exploring the creative world at large through connecting with other artists, internet research, and being patient.
Often I will sit at my jewelers bench and push around stones and metals without feeling obligated to create anything, sometimes lightning will strike and suddenly I create something that is a home run.
What book are you reading?
Lo-TEK Design by Radical Indigenism by Julia Watson
What was the last thing that you fell in love with?
My daughter singing her abc’s while strumming a plastic guitar (she is two and a half).
What do you love most about yourself?
Consciously removing as many limitations as possible. I employ a “can do” mentality that has helped me overcome a lot of self esteem issues that have been a side effect of a very challenging and at times traumatic childhood.
What do you think is the most important quality in a human?
Humility and a sense of humor, which maybe be one in the same.
Do you have a spiritual practice?
I feel being close to Mother Earth has a profound effect on my spiritual wellness. In nature I am able to open up and receive what I think is guidance from the mystical world. I will never forget the time I was enjoying a very meditative walk on a beach in the Hampton’s and I was guided to move in with my father (a ridiculous idea I thought), it was so strong I did. I left my boyfriend, I left my job, I packed my car, and drove to Martha’s Vineyard to live with him. The day after I arrived my dad received his cancer diagnosis and sadly passed away about 9 months later. I spent the entire summer and part of the fall living with him. It was the best gift I could have ever asked for, thank god I was listening.
Who are your role models?
Jennifer Hart owner of The Love Apple restaurant in Taos. Jennifer’s commitment to integrity, excellence and vision in business has inspired me for decades.
Giorgio Armani, Fashion Designer. I have obsessed over his impeccable designs since the day I discovered him through fashion magazines as a teenager. Did you know he didn’t launch his eponymous label until he was 40 years old?
My father Edward Stanton will always be a role model for me, he never ever held back his love.
If you could change one thing about our world, what would it be? Is there a individual or an organization doing work in this area that you want us to know about?
I would take money out of politics.
Before I die I want to…
Read the entire twelve volumes of Sir Richard Burton’s translation of the book of the Thousand Nights and A Night (The Arabian Knights).
